Research & Development
Step 1 - Idea generation
The Sons of the Revolution and Fraunces Tavern asked me to source a brewery that would produce a signature beer for us. After some research I chose Staten Island’s Flagship Brewery. They felt like an ideal partner for this project, based on their location within the 5 Boroughs, as well as their proximity to the Tavern. I also knew they brewed great beer.
Step 2 - Creating the product
After some preliminary research in to colonial drinking habits, and of course accounting for current consumer tastes, I proposed an Amber Ale - a beer style that is very approachable yet also gives the drinker an enjoyable and memorable drinking experience. We met with the Head Brewer and began to develop the beer further including deciding on the right grain and hops. I really wanted to tie the roots of this beer to the history of the Tavern so I proposed calling the style an American Amber, which was also a nod to my wife - my own American Amber.
Step 3 - Branding
While the finalized recipe was being brewed, I moved on to designing the circular fisheye we use to represent the beer at the bar.
I spent some time researching the early flags of the American Revolutionary period looking for some visual cues relating to how the original 13 colonies was represented.
